Like Father, Like Son

Dee Pillette played most of his career with the St. Louis Browns and their reincarnation as the Baltimore Orioles. The son of a former major league pitcher (Herman Pillette) who played exhibition games alongside Satchel Paige, Dee himself eventually teamed with Paige during the latter’s stint with St. Louis.

Above: Dee’s father, Herman, appeared in the E120 Caramel set of 1922.

A groundball pitcher, he still had trouble shutting down opposing batters. Opponents batted .273 against him over the course of his career. He led the league in losses in 1951 (as did his father in 1923). Dee pulled things together for one season in 1954 when he made the All-Star team and captured the Orioles’ first ever win in Baltimore.
